Benchmarking allows comparisons to be made between activity rates within and across industries. This then allows an assessment of the relative effectiveness of an operation. It can then be used as a tool to highlight strengths and weaknesses and initiate appropriate change. This is particularly relevant to the order picking process, which is the most labour intensive part of the warehousing process. The methodology of picking is largely determined by the capabilities of the warehouse management system. Benefits include:
·Increased pick rates
·Error reduction
·Faster response times
·More efficient use of labour resources
